You know the smell. The towel comes off the line or out of the dryer smelling fine — then ten minutes after a shower it's back: that damp, musty, somehow-dirty smell from a towel you just washed. It's one of the most common laundry complaints in Australia, and the good news is it's almost always fixable in one afternoon.
Why clean towels smell musty
The smell is bacteria and mildew living in residue your wash didn't remove. Four things put it there:
- Too much detergent. The counter-intuitive one. Overdosing coats towel fibres in detergent that never fully rinses out; that coating traps moisture, body oils and odour. More detergent makes smelly towels worse, not better.
- Fabric softener buildup. Liquid softener leaves a waxy film that makes towels less absorbent — so they stay damp longer, which is exactly what mildew wants.
- Sitting damp. A wet towel balled in the hamper, or a finished load left in the machine overnight, grows the smell before you've even dried it.
- A dirty washing machine. If the machine itself smells, every load starts contaminated — residue and mould collect in the door gasket, drawer and drum.
The rescue wash
About 15 minutes of hands-on time:
- Hot cycle, towels only, one cup of white vinegar, no detergent. The acid dissolves the built-up detergent and softener film that's trapping the smell.
- Follow with a normal warm or hot wash, correctly dosed. This lifts what the vinegar loosened. Correctly dosed means exactly one dose — with DSSLV sheets that's half a sheet for a standard load, or a full sheet for a big 8kg+ towel load.
- Dry completely, ideally in the sun. Bone dry before they're folded — an Australian clothesline is the best towel-freshener ever invented.
Stubborn cases: repeat the vinegar cycle once more before the detergent wash. That's it — no strip-washing chemistry set required.
Clean the machine while you're at it
- Wipe inside the rubber door gasket — you may be unpleasantly surprised.
- Pull out the detergent drawer and wash it in warm soapy water.
- Run an empty hot cycle with a cup of vinegar monthly.
- Leave the door and drawer open between washes so the drum dries out.
Keeping them fresh for good

- Skip the separate softener bottle. Softener film is the other top cause. A softening agent is already built into the DSSLV sheet formula, so you're not layering a separate rinse-cycle softener on top — and it's that separate softener that's most responsible for the waxy, odour-trapping coating.
- Hang towels spread out between uses — a scrunched towel on a hook stays damp in the middle.
- Don't leave loads in the machine. Even an hour in a warm drum on a summer day is enough to start the smell.
- Wash towels every three to four uses in warm or hot water.

Should I add vinegar to every towel wash?
No — it's a rescue treatment and an occasional machine cleaner, not a weekly additive. Regular correct dosing means you shouldn't need it.
Does this work for gym gear and swimmers?
