The Australian Spring Cleaning Checklist (2026): Room by Room in One Weekend

Bright living room with sheer curtains, a wooden ladder of folded linens and a basket of eco cleaning tools

Spring in Australia starts on the 1st of September, and it earns its cleaning reputation honestly: a winter of closed windows leaves dust in every corner, humidity has been quietly growing mould in the wet areas, and the pollen about to arrive rewards a home that's had a proper reset. Here's a realistic room-by-room checklist — the kind you can actually finish in a weekend, not a fantasy renovation plan.

Before you clean: the 15-minute declutter rule

You can't clean clutter. Walk each room with four boxes — keep, donate, bin, relocate — and give yourself 15 minutes per room, no agonising. The cleaning cupboard itself is the best place to start: most Australian homes are storing half-empty bottles of products they stopped using years ago. Empty them properly, recycle the bottles, and enjoy the shelf space.

The laundry

  • Deep clean the washing machine — gasket, dispenser drawer, hot maintenance cycle, pump filter. This is the single highest-payoff job on the list, and we've written the full 20-minute method in how to clean your washing machine.
  • Wash the winter doonas, blankets and coats before they're stored: a full laundry sheet for these big 8kg+ loads, then line-dry them completely before bagging, or you're storing next winter's musty smell.
  • Wipe down the machine top, taps and hoses, and check the hoses for bulges while you're there.

The kitchen

  • Degrease the rangehood filters: soak in hot water with a squirt of dish detergent, scrub, dry, done.
  • Wipe the fridge seals (a toothbrush in the folds) and pull the fridge out to vacuum the coils — it runs cheaper afterwards.
  • Clean the dishwasher filter and run an empty hot cycle. If your glassware has developed a white haze over winter, here's the 60-second test to diagnose and fix it.
  • Empty the crumb-and-jar-lid drawer everyone has, wipe the cupboard shelves, and check use-by dates in the pantry.
  • Benches, splashback, cupboard fronts and handles: two strips of a multi-purpose sheet in a 500ml spray bottle covers the whole room, streak-free.

The bathroom

  • Shower screen and tiles first while the room is dry: spray, let it sit five minutes, then scrub top to bottom.
  • Grout and silicone: a paste of bicarb and water on an old toothbrush lifts most winter mould; ventilate well and let surfaces dry completely afterwards.
  • Wash the shower curtain (machine, gentle, half a sheet) or bin it if it's past saving.
  • Descale the showerhead: 30 minutes in a bag of white vinegar.
  • Empty the vanity of expired products — the four-box rule applies here too.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Rotate the mattress, wash the mattress protector and all the pillowcases, and get the pillows themselves into sunshine for an afternoon.
  • Curtains: most machine-wash on gentle cold — half a sheet — and rehang damp to drop the wrinkles out. Blinds get a microfibre wipe per slat.
  • Ceiling fans before they're needed: a pillowcase slipped over each blade traps the winter dust instead of raining it on the bed.
  • Vacuum under beds and couches, pull cushion covers off for a wash, and clean the window tracks (vacuum first, then a soapy toothbrush).
  • Windows inside and out on a cloudy day — direct sun dries the spray into streaks before you can wipe it.

Outside and the pets

  • Clear gutters and check drains before the spring storms do it for you.
  • Hose and scrub the outdoor furniture, wipe down the barbecue, and re-oil the timber if it's looking grey.
  • Wash the dog's bedding (full sheet, hot if the label allows), and give the dog their spring bath while you're at it — here's how often that should actually happen.

The one-weekend plan

Saturday: declutter pass, laundry room, kitchen. Sunday: bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas. The following weekend (or a long lunch): outside and the extras. Don't chase perfection — a finished checklist beats a perfect kitchen and an abandoned house.

Restock lighter than you found it

Spring cleaning has a habit of ending with a boot full of new plastic bottles. It doesn't need to: one slim drawer of dissolvable sheets covers the laundry, the dishwasher, every sprayable surface and the dog. If you're replacing what you just decluttered, build a whole-home pack — any 2 packs save 15%, any 3 save 20%, any 4 or 5 save 25% and any 6 or more save 30%, applied automatically, with free shipping over $69 and a 30-day money-back guarantee. And if you want the deeper philosophy behind the swap, start with ditching plastic room by room.
